There are so many things that are available to help us stay in touch with people. These same techno advancements are also available for use with business, especially if you are starting a home based business on a shoe string budget. This is what I did. I got involved in a home base business without any capital or knowledge of business. With the help of my business partner I learned about many things that I could use free from the internet to learn my business.

Once I learned about the products that the company I became a dealer for had I began doing some retailing. Once you get to these white pages you have the choice of entering a name and getting a number or you can enter the number and get the name and address. Because this is the opposite of how we traditionally look for telephone numbers it is called the reverse telephone directory. If the number was for a cell phone the geographical location was still given. On the reverse telephone directory the time zone is given and the current local time is displayed. This is really helpful considering some time zones have day light savings time and others do not. Also when you are making several calls it is hard to keep the different time zones straight.

Since I have learned about the reverse telephone directory I have also used it in other areas of my life besides business. If you are looking at classified ads and want to know who owns the item you can enter the phone number and get the name and address of the person. This is a great and handy tool; unfortunately it only has the listings for land lines. Mobile phones are just that mobile so the address is more difficult to track. Law enforcement and the various mobile phone companies have access to the billing information on mobile phones, but so far this information is not available to the general public.

There are so many valuable lessons to learn in life. This year I am celebrating my thirty year high school class reunion and I am finding that I can still learn new things. A year ago I was complaining about the long commute I had to work, the poor supervision I was getting and the endless paper work that piled on my desk. Once we decided to become dealers we needed to get the word out that we had this business. We had to decide on a name so that we could get cards and letterhead printed. We came up with our name and had cards made. I called a friend of ours who is a CPA and asked him some tax questions. He asked me if I had done a business name registration. I told him that I did not know what that was. He said I should go to the official website for our state and do a business name registration. By doing this no one else could pick the same name we did for their company. A business name registration is not mandatory, but if we would build a successful business and did not have the business name registration someone else could take the same name. This could confuse customers and we could lose business. Even if you have been in business for years someone else can come and register the same name if you have not already done so. The registration can be done online on the states website and there is not cost. At the time that you are registering your business a search will be done to insure that the name has not already been registered to someone else.

I took the CPA’s advice and went on the website and registered. No one else had the name so we are official. I cannot believe the many things that I am learning that I had never thought about in my former life. This has been a wonderful opportunity for me and my family.
